11.06.2011 - The FIVB wants to promote women’s refereeing
The International Federation of Volleyball would like to have more female referees. To help this wish come true, the FIVB President, Mr. Jizhong Wei from China, came over personally to The Centre du Leman Hotel in Jongny to join the Referee Seminar organized by the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV). Accompanied by Mr. Wei, the CEV President AndrĂ© Meyer was present as well. During the last two days, various female referees from different European countries took part in a course aimed at better understanding their role. « It’s the second year I’m participating in this Seminar, underlines Jizhong Wei, who will later in the evening enjoy watching the game between China and the USA. On a knowledge level of refereeing, women referees are as good as men, but unfortunately on a social level, they don’t get the same support. It’s a political problem, that’s why we have to integrate female referees in big international competitions. Talking of that, we wish to see women at the next Olympic Games which will take place in London. I will personally send this request to the IOC Executive Chief.

11.06.2011 - Interview with Alice Blom – The Nederlands
Interview with the nice and smiling Alice Blom, captain of the Dutch team who just wontheir game against Italy (3-1).

So Alice, how was it?
It was great! It’s actually our first victory here in Montreux, but also for the season. Wehad a tournament in China a few weeks ago, in which we were training andfighting really hard but we didn’t win a game. So I’m very happy for the team now! Alsobecause of yesterday where we finally lost 2-3 after initially leading 2-0. Wewere fighting for every point but we didn’t win, so I am very very happy today.

Not too tired?
Well…that’s ok (laugh)! If you win and you’re tired, it’s doesn’t matter! But no,really I am fine!

How can you explain that you’ve flighted a lot during the first two setsand then the third one was quite easy? (won 25-14)
Oh! That’sa difficult question! You know, we have a very young team and you can see thatwe have a lot of up-side-downs… we had a lot of matches were we scored 6-7points in raw and that was maybe to reason why we played like this… I don’tknow but I am very happy that we’ve been able to win the third set much betterthan the two first ones.

What are your plans for this season, for your team?
Oh we havea lot of plans! We have a big tournament in September with the European Championshipand after Montreux some other girls will join the team again to complete thegroup. After that we have lots and lots of tournaments. We want to do a goodjob at the European Championship in order to get a ticket for the World Cup! Westill have a lot of work ahead!

What was the difference between the game of today and yesterday’s one?
I thinkwhat we did pretty well yesterday. We were serving quite well during the firsttwo sets. It’s exactly what the Japanese team started to do afterward. We also hada lot of problems in reception from the very beginning. I think today we wereable to keep the pressure also on serving, while we had a good chance on block-defense.And I think that was the difference between today’s game and the one from yesterday.

What is your opinion about this tournament in Montreux?
Oh it’s agreat tournament! I’ve been here for many years. The first time I came here wasa long time ago. It’s beautiful here! The hotel where we are in is up in themountains and we have a great view. And also everybody here is great! It’s avery nice tournament to play! Really!

So you’d like to come back?
Yeah! For sure!

So that comes to my next question which is more private; you are 31 now, what are your personal plans? Stay with the team or get married and have children?(smile)
Oh first Ihave to find a husband which is very difficult! (laugh) No… I don’t know yet! Istill enjoy playing and I’m having a good time to be with the young girls inthe team! I still feel physically and mentally fit; I’m feeling really goodactually! I will keep on playing as long as I’m feeling like this and also aslong as my coach wants me! But for now, it’s seems to be ok!! (laugh) We’ll seein the future!

11.06.2011 - China: laureate of group A
On the Pool A, China finishes first after beating the USA also in five sets. This success enabled them to avoid playing against Cuba in the semi-finals and to face Japan for a place in the final round in this 27th edition. The last game of this fourth journey offered a great show high in emotions to the entire public. Every single player made powerful kills and great defenses. The Americans, led by Kristin Richards (14 points), were the favorites in this match. Nevertheless, the Asians had an amazing spirit which they could use to speed up the pace in order to break the opponent block. Charles Kiraly’s team has probably lost this game because of its lack of experience. If the last Olympic Games vice champions want to battle in the final, as last year, they will have to kick out Cuba in the semi-final. In the other semi-final, China will play against Japan in a 100% Asian fight, which will surely be exciting. It is worth noting that the Japanese never took part in the final of this tournament.
